Electric Imp updates impOS to double device code capacity, call time on slow updates

Electric Imp is pleased to announce that today we started rolling out the latest, most advanced version of impOS, Release 32, to all developers.

Release 32’s main focus has always been on fixes and improvements – of which there are many; check out the release notes– but we also took the opportunity to add some important new features for our developers and customers: a major increase in the amount of Squirrel code that can be stored & run on a device, and the incorporation of a new impOS upgrade mechanism.

Thanks to changes made to the device-side virtual machine and the server-side bytecode compiler, we’ve improved the way Squirrel code is stored on the imp. With release 32, you’ll get roughly twice as much space for code on the imp than you had under release 30, without making a single change to your source. This gives you considerably more room for code and data, allowing you to build apps of much greater functionality and sophistication.

Meanwhile, the new OS firmware upgrade process is not only much faster than before - typically twice as fast - but also more reliable. This means that it’s better able to cope with poor network connections, resulting in a more resilient upgrade process: you can trust that devices in the field will upgrade with the absolute minimum of fuss and downtime.

The UART FIFOs, both input and output, are now manually configurable. That’s a feature we’ve had a lot of requests for, and now it’s here, enabling more flexibility for customers using serial interfaces heavily.

In addition, we have been delving deep into connectivity corner cases seen in the field and have improved compatibility and resilience even further based on real world data.

Today’s release follows an extensive open beta test program, and I’d like to thank everyone who took part and reported issues or otherwise helped us debug the new version of impOS. With your help we were able to nail down and fix a number of issues, particularly those relating to the new features and to connectivity.
